How the small room circuit holds a season

How many quiet nights can one city hold? The desk works the answer from one counted figure, four assumptions you can replace, and a share nobody knows until it is counted.

About 100 nights a season, across every small room in the city together, on the assumptions written below. Nobody sets that number; it falls out of one counted population figure and the share of that population willing to sit in a quiet room more than once. The share is the only term that moves the answer by a factor of five, and it is the one term nobody has counted.

One counted figure and four guesses

Nights in a season equals population, times share, times visits, divided by seats times fill. Only the first term is counted; the other four are guesses until a room replaces them with its own numbers. Statistics Iceland puts the country at 394,324 people and Reykjavík, the one pool a single circuit can draw from, at 139,804; the capital region gained 2,858 residents over the year, worth about two nights at the worked assumptions. The desk uses the city figure the way the room notes use a tape measure: as scale, not as verdict. Share is the fraction of the population that will ever sit down in a small room; visits is how often each of those people comes back; seats times fill is how many of them one night can hold. The worked example runs at 40 seats, 70 per cent fill, so 28 people a night, and 4 visits a person.

The whole answer sits in the share

Hold every other term still. At 1 in 200 of the 139,804 people that the 1 January 2026 count gives the capital, the pool is 699 people; at 4 visits each they make 2,796 attendances a season; at 28 people a night that is about 100 nights, not for one room but for every room in the city together. At 1 in 500 the same city holds 40 nights. At 1 in 100 it holds 200, and the binding limit stops being the audience and becomes the calendar, because every night needs someone on the chair and 200 nights is 200 performances to find. Between the low line and the high line sits a factor of five, produced entirely by the one number nobody has written down.

What happens when a second room opens?

Nothing happens to the pool. A second room does not add audience; it divides it. Three rooms sharing one pool of 699 people hold about 33 nights each; six rooms hold about 17 each. Two rooms on the same evening are not two events but one event arguing with itself over the same 28 people, and the room that needed a full house to pay its way loses. The decision sits with the person who books the room, and it is a calendar decision before it is anything else: a Tuesday in one place, a Thursday in another, and never two quiet nights asking the same people for the same evening. A season holds by spacing, not by volume.

How does a room count its own share?

Not with a door count. Admissions tell you how many seats were occupied, not how many people did the occupying: 100 admissions might be 100 people once each, or 25 people four times, and those are different circuits with different futures. The instrument that separates them is a list. A room that collects 140 addresses across a season and strikes the duplicates has a counted pool; 139,804 divided by 140 is about 1,000, so the room's share is about 1 in 1,000, and its season at the same 4 visits and 28 seats is 140 times 4 divided by 28, which is 20 nights, not 100. The same release puts 62 municipalities in the country, 26 of them under 1,000 people; at 1 in 200, a municipality of 1,000 has a pool of five, and five people is a dinner party, not a circuit. The arithmetic holds; the circuit does not. And the share is not fixed. It grows the slow way, one good night at a time: a room where the last song stayed quiet is a room people talk about afterwards, and every friend who comes twice is the share moving.

Five numbers to carry out of a season

Write them down while the season is still warm; each one replaces a guess in the line at the top of this note.

  • Total admissions added across every night: the fill, counted at last instead of assumed.
  • Counted people, not admissions: one deduplicated list of names or addresses, which is the pool.
  • The pool set against the city's population, written as 1 in so many: that ratio is the share.
  • The calendar as run: nights held, nights deliberately left empty, clashes known in advance.
  • People who came twice or more: the line between an audience and a crowd that happened once.
